PROJECT FOCUS

Overview
Sandy Cemetery improvement and expansion project involved the delivery of extensive landscaping, infrastructure, and access upgrades to support long-term community use. The works were carried out with careful consideration for site
sensitivity, including designated archaeological zones and the need for a respectful cemetery environment. The scope combined
civil engineering, soft landscaping, and public-realm improvements.

OUR ROLE

Biba’s Landscapes were appointed as main contractor to carry out the works to create the new space which included site clearance, earthworks, road and pathways, landscaping and installation of street furniture, to create a tranquil space. The works began with a detailed site set up and clearance phase including vegetation removal within areas of mixed ground conditions and ‘no dig’ archaeological zones.A new internal road and pathway network was constructed tied in seamlessly with existing networks. Tree planting, grass seeding and landscaping were carried out to soften and create a tranquil space.Fencing was installed around the perimeter for privacy.Bird and bat boxes have been installed to support biodiversity and ecological enhancements.Benches, bins and standpipes for visitor convenience.

Despite the challenges posed by the no-dig zones, the project was successfully delivered on schedule and within budget. The team’s careful planning, adaptability, and collaborative approach ensured that all elements of the cemetery improvement—from roadways and footpaths to landscaping and visitor amenities—were completed to a high standard.
